Alexis and Terrance will be getting married later this year, and when it came time to plan their engagement photos, they knew they wanted something classic, soft, and natural. We decided on Torrey Pines State Beach, one of my favorite locations for an engagement session in San Diego. With the cliffs, open coastline, and the way the light settles there at sunset, it creates such a calm and beautiful backdrop. Evenings like this one tend to unfold really naturally. We walked along the shoreline, let the session move at an easy pace, and photographed as the sun slowly and candidly. Engagement sessions are meant to feel relaxed; a chance to spend time together and document this season before the wedding day arrives.
What happens when you book an engagement session with me?
Whenever couples book me, one of the first things I send over is my welcome guide. It walks through my process, the packages I offer, and what working together looks like from start to finish. Once a couple decides what feels right for them, I send over a proposal with a contract and invoice, and a deposit officially secures the date. Inside that welcome guide is also a location guide that I’ve put together over time. It includes different spots around San Diego along with galleries from sessions I’ve photographed there, so couples can really see how each place photographs. I’m always happy to help brainstorm locations too – sometimes we’ll go back and forth until we find something that truly resonates.
Choosing a location that feels like you
One of the biggest pieces of advice I give couples when planning an engagement session in San Diego is to choose a location that actually reflects who you are. The place you choose really does influence how the photos feel. If you’re not beach people, we probably shouldn’t force a beach session just because it’s popular. What matters most is that the location feels authentic to your personality and your relationship.
I’ve photographed engagement sessions at beaches, public parks, couples’ homes, neighborhood streets, and even casual evenings grabbing pizza and wandering around downtown. Some couples love doing a North Park session where we walk through their favorite spots, coffee shops, or places they spend time together.
When the location connects to your life, the photos naturally feel more meaningful.
What to wear for engagement photos
Outfits are another part of planning that couples sometimes feel unsure about, and I’m always happy to help with this part of the process. Send photos, text options, ask questions I’m an open book when it comes to styling help. For sessions in nature, like an engagement session at Torrey Pines or other outdoor spots around San Diego, I usually recommend classic and muted colors. Blacks, whites, creams, browns, grays, and soft neutral tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on the connection between the two of you.
If you’re going for something more editorial or fashion-forward, we can absolutely lean into that too. The most important thing is that what you’re wearing feels authentic and comfortable.
You don’t have to worry about posing
One thing couples often mention before their session is that they’re nervous about posing. The good news is that you don’t have to think about that part at all. I guide my couples through the entire session. Sometimes that means gentle direction, sometimes it’s small prompts to get you moving and interacting naturally, and sometimes it’s simply stepping back and letting a moment happen. My goal is always to create a space where you can relax and focus on each other rather than the camera.
Sessions like this one with Alexis and Terrance are always a reminder that the best engagement photos come from authenticity, choosing a location that resonates, wearing something that feels like you, and simply enjoying the experience together. And when that happens during a sunset engagement session in San Diego, the result is something really special.
